The Cabrillo badminton team continued their Moore League dominance this season, capturing three titles at the Moore League finals that concluded Wednesday afternoon at Jordan High School.
After their undefeated regular season, the Jaguars took the top spot in the girls’ singles, boys’ doubles and girls’ doubles events.
On day one of competition on Monday, Cabrillo’s senior Jasmin Ramos overcame hot gym conditions and captured the girls’ singles title, defeating Poly’s Nga Pham 21-17, 12-21, 21-18.
“Monday was crazy,” Ramos said. “I thought I was was going to pass out. The area was really hot with people and a lot of pressure on who’s winning and who’s not.”
Ramos recovered after dropping the second game and never looked back to capture the title.
“Along with making sure I was able to be hydrated, I was able to push more with my backhand because she wasn’t really able to get those,” Ramos explained
Along with Ramos, her teammates claimed Moore League finals titles in the boys and girls doubles.
In the girls’ doubles, Cabrillo’s top-seeded duo of Jaylene Ramirez Dias and Maria Buenviaje swept through the competition from start to finish and defeated Wilson’s Denise Abon and Valerie Espinoza 21-12, 21-14.
Joaquin Orozco won his second straight doubles title after he and Justin Yambao defeated Lakewood’s Andrew and Anthony Heang 21-23, 21-15, 21-15.
While Cabrillo shined as a team, Wilson’s Abhishek Jain once again dominated his competitions, winning the boys’ singles and mixed doubles events.
It was back-to-back titles for Jain as he swept his way through the bracket and proved why he was the top seed, defeating Poly’s Nick Jensen 21-9, 21-13.
Jain wasn’t done there as he concluded the three-day event with another title, joining partner Susana Martinez to defeat Cabrillo’s Joaquin Orozco and Jaylene Ramirez Diaz 21-14, 24-19.
“Ever since sophomore year, I’ve been training really hard,” Jain said. “I didn’t know this year was going to be really hard.”
While the Moore League regular season has concluded, the teams will turn their attention to the CIF-SS playoffs next week.
Cabrillo will be playing in the Open Division bracket, facing Arcadia in the quarterfinals on Monday. In Division 1, Long Beach Poly will visit Westminster and Lakewood will visit Marina. In the 3rd Level bracket, Millikan hosts Gahr, Wilson hosts Loara and Jordan travels to Fairmont Prep.
