The transfer had already been leaked in the past few days, and on Monday SV Darmstadt 98 and 1. FC Heidenheim made the move official: Mathias Honsak remains a Bundesliga player despite Darmstadt’s relegation and will play for FCH in the future. As the Ostalb club announced on Monday, the offensive player will receive a three-year contract until the summer of 2027. Since Honsak’s contract with the Lilies expires on June 30, he will not cost Heidenheim any transfer fee.

“Mathias has repeatedly aroused our interest in recent years. We are very pleased that we have now secured a commitment from next summer,” Heidenheim’s head of sports, Robert Strauss, is quoted as saying in the club’s statement. “With Mathias we are gaining an experienced offensive player who has the potential and the will to take the next step in his career with us.”

The 27-year-old Austrian, whose first stop in Germany was a loan to Holstein Kiel, moved from RB Salzburg to Darmstadt in 2019, immediately became a regular player in the 2nd Bundesliga and celebrated promotion with the Lilies in 2023. In the now-ending Bundesliga season, he mostly shuttled between the starting eleven and the bench, and was also injured for weeks at the beginning of the year. In 21 Bundesliga games he has one goal, one assist and an average kicker rating of 4.21.

“The FCH has continually developed as a club over many years and stands for its very own, successful path,” Honsak himself explains his move. “I was very impressed by that, and I’m even more excited to be a part of it in the future.”

With the move, Heidenheim underlines its status as an early planner among the Bundesliga clubs. Honsak is already the fourth confirmed newcomer for the coming season. The promoted team had previously announced the signings of Julian Niehues from 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Luca Kerber from 1. FC Saarbrücken and most recently Sirlord Conteh from SC Paderborn. No other Bundesliga club has secured so many new signings for the coming season. Leonardo Scienza from second division promoted Ulm will soon be the next new player.
