Josef Newgarden triumphs again at the Indy 500. The American secures the victory in the last lap.

Racing driver Josef Newgarden has won the legendary Indianapolis 500 for the second time in a row. The American relegated Mexican Pato O’Ward to second place in the 108th edition of the oval race by overtaking on the last lap. Australian Scott Dixon came third.

The 33-year-old Newgarden became the first driver since Helio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002 to triumph in two editions of the Indy 500 in two years. This special achievement earned the two-time IndyCar champion bonus prize money of 440,000 US dollars – the equivalent of around 405,000 euros.

“I knew we could win this race again,” said Newgarden. “There’s just no better way to win this race than this. I also have to give credit to Pato. He’s an incredibly clean driver. It takes two people to make this work.”

McLaren driver O’Ward, on the other hand, has to wait a little longer for his first win at the classic. He had his sights set on victory two years ago, but was beaten in the final spurt by former Formula 1 driver Marcus Ericsson. Due to his talent, O’Ward was also considered a candidate for a Formula 1 cockpit in the past, and at McLaren he is the official reserve driver for the two regular drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Before the race on Sunday, those involved had to be patient. A thunderstorm over the track caused a delay of over four hours before the start could take place.
