Thomas Darazs Takes the Helm at LASK: A New Era Begins

LASK recently parted ways with its head coach Thomas Sageder. His successor comes from Schwechat and was the previous academy director at the Bundesliga club: Thomas Darazs. The 46-year-old will coach the Linz team together with Maximilian Ritscher, but will act as “boss”, as the LASK announced, citing “licensing reasons”. Because: Darazs has the UEFA Pro license.

This gives the Schwechater a great honor and allows him to coach in the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time. As an active player, Darazs was able to look forward to 97 Bundesliga appearances for Wiener Austria and SV Ried. After a few academy and amateur positions, the ex-Schwechat kicker ended up at the ÖFB in 2020, where he was to be active until 2022 (assistant coach of the U15). From 2022 to 2023, Darazs worked as assistant coach to Andreas Wieland at Beerschot in the Belgian 2nd league before moving to the LASK youth team.

Trainer effect with Darazs and Ritscher

Darazs immediately experienced the coaching effect and won sensationally with LASK against Red Bull Salzburg 3-1. “We did it very easily,” the Schwechater praised his team, but immediately put the coaching team’s contribution to the success into perspective: “We only had one and a half training sessions before this game. That’s why we don’t want to take it upon ourselves.” Nevertheless, the momentum is now clearly with the people of Linz and the neo-coach duo. The focus is already on the tasks ahead. “This training week is very important, then we have three games ahead of us,” says Darazs, looking at the marathon with three games in eight days. The game will be at home against Hartberg on April 21st, the second leg will take place away on April 24th. What follows is the hit at home against Rapid Vienna on April 28th.

Darazs is now engaged until the summer. Does he hope that it will move from an interim solution to a long-term solution? “Anyone who would say otherwise would be lying. “LASK is one of the biggest clubs in the Bundesliga,” says the Schwechater, who is toying with a long-term commitment, but can also identify with his previous area of expertise: “Without being romantic: I also really enjoy being the academy director at LASK.” In any case, he’s learning I just know everything “around” the Bundesliga club and will soak it all up. “This is of course a very attractive task for me.”
