The Hallein Braves: Reviving Baseball in Salzburg with Championship Success

The Hallein Braves have successfully revived the sport of baseball in Salzburg. Next weekend there will be a home game on Salzburg soil for the first time in almost 20 years.

In the early 2000s, Salzburg had a baseball team, the Hornets, then based in Salzburg-Lehen. “But they haven’t existed for about 15 years, so I thought about starting a team again because there are teams everywhere in Austria,” says Richard Bermudez.

In the spring of 2022, the Venezuelan native took action and founded the Hallein Braves, currently the only active baseball club in the state and only the second club ever after the Hornets. And with great success: Less than twelve months after the club was founded, the baseball players of the Hallein Braves had already won their first championship title, and with a completely clean slate at that.

Last season in the 2nd Bundesliga was, as expected, tougher, but Bermudez was also happy with fourth place (out of six): “That was a great performance, there are much more experienced teams playing than us. In terms of sport, we belong in the 2nd Bundesliga.”
