The Disappearance of Line Judges: A Look at the Impact of Technology on ATP Circuit

While refereeing caused a lot of talk during the Monte‐Carlo Masters 1000, notably due to the enormous error suffered by Jannik Sinner during his semi‐final against Stefanos Tsitsipas, Benoît Maylin offers an editorial for Winamax on the disappearance in 2025 of line judges on the ATP circuit.

“Next year, the line judges will all have disappeared from the ATP circuit, even on clay. Blame it on technology. This is reminiscent of all the anticipation films that warn us of the dehumanization of the planet. This has been sneakily happening for years. A small computer here, cameras there. The referees hide behind the technology and fatten their eyes by no longer making decisions: hence the lack of vigilance, errors and even abandonment of their post! The players no longer trust them. On the other hand, they obey without flinching the robotic voice of electronic arbitration which is supposed to be infallible. Are they right? Absolutely, yes. With the system that will be put in place, the margin of error is between 3.6 millimeters and 1.8 millimeters. It’s reassuring, certainly, but in terms of emotion, it’s zero. No more rants, no more discussions, no more breakdowns, no more shouting, no more life! McEnroe just turned a thousand years old…and so did I”regrets the French journalist.
