Surprise Victories and Olympic Qualifications: Updates from Badminton Tournament in Brussels

The 23-year-old from Brussels, 42nd in the world, was surprised by the Finnish Joakim Oldorff (BWF 68), 22, in two sets (21-9, 21-10) and 33 minutes of play.

Exempted from the first round, Julien Carraggi saw his opponent, the Czech Jan Louda, 54th in the world, withdraw from the 2nd round. Reason for entering the tournament in the round of 16.

Lianne Tan (BWF 50), 33, was also eliminated from the start, in the 2nd round. The Limburger is aiming for a 4th consecutive Olympic participation. She currently occupies 23rd position in the qualifying rankings for the Games.

Julien Carraggi is in 19th place in this Olympic ranking and yet practically has his ticket for the Olympics in his pocket. He was eliminated in the quarter-finals last year at the Euro in Krakow, played as part of the European Games.

Clara Lassaux, 21 years old, 157th in the world, was eliminated from the start on Monday by the 29-year-old Frenchwoman, Rosy Oktavia Pancasari (BWF 86).

The end of the qualifications (Race to Paris) occurs on April 28 regarding the allocation of tickets for the 2024 Olympic Games. This will involve appearing among the 35 players selected in these rankings which will be made official on April 30 taking into account the limit of two athletes/pairs per nation in each event.
