Spanish Government Places Spanish Football Federation Under Supervision Amid Corruption Investigation

The Spanish government announced Thursday the placing under supervision of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), at the center of an investigation for corruption, after having been shaken by the scandal of the forced kiss of its ex-president Luis Rubiales.

“The Spanish government adopted this decision to redress the serious situation in which the RFEF finds itself, so that the entity can begin a stage of renewal in a climate of stability,” indicated the Higher Sports Council (CSD), an organization dependent on the Ministry of Sports.

Concretely, “a supervision, standardization and representation commission created by the CSD” and led by “independent personalities”, will exercise “supervision of the RFEF during the coming months”, in “the interest of Spain” , adds the press release. The country is a candidate for the organization of the 2030 World Cup jointly with Portugal and Morocco.

A corruption investigation is underway

Already shaken by the scandal of the forced kiss of Luis Rubiales to the world champion Jennifer Hermoso last summer following the coronation at the World Cup, the RFEF is now at the center of an investigation for corruption which led to the indictment of the former strongman of Spanish football and his interim successor at the head of the Federation, Pedro Rocha.

The Administrative Court of Sport (TAD) estimated in a recent report that Mr. Rocha and his interim management had committed “very serious” mistakes, by making decisions going beyond their competence. It is this same TAD report which led to the decision taken on Thursday.

The Board of Directors will meet next Tuesday to discuss this new situation. Elections for the presidency of the Federation are currently scheduled for May 6. Pedro Rocha is the only candidate.
