Sensational Victory for BG Göttingen in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga Leads to Surprising Consequences

It was one of the biggest surprises of the season in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. Kellerkind BG Göttingen defeated secret favorite Niners Chemnitz 100:99 after extra time. And that even though the “Veilchen” were already behind by 24 points!

Development player David DeJulius (24/USA) cried with happiness. Coach Olivier Foucart (39) cheered on the floor with his daughters Oona (12) and Rosie (10). Because if they had lost, Göttingen would have ended up back in the middle of the relegation battle.

But now it comes out: the sensational victory has consequences!

Because the BG only had nine players on the score sheet instead of the required ten, the club had to pay a fine of 1,000 euros for a “violation of the tender”.

The most bizarre penalty in sport!

The BBL decided this by majority vote more than 15 years ago. Back then, it was mainly to increase the German professionals’ chances of playing minutes. According to paragraph 4 of the announcement, a maximum of 12 men are allowed on the match report, six of whom must be German. If there are ten players, at least four need a German passport. If a German player is missing from the report, it even costs a fine of 7,500 euros! But that wasn’t the case with the BG.

If a club has fewer than the required number of players available due to injury or illness, it can request an exception from the league in advance. But that didn’t work for the Göttingen team on Sunday…

It was already clear that the long-term injured Harper Kamp (35), Max Wüllner (22) as well as Peter Hemschemeier (20) and Fedor Zugic (20/both ankles) would not be fit for action. However, Osaro Rich (25) actually wanted to make his comeback after a shoulder injury. But then he felt a tweak in his thigh while warming up and he was spared.

BG managing director Frank Meinertshagen (56) was aware that he had one player too few. However, emphasizes: “In our opinion, it does not make sense to put a player on the bench who is injured and cannot be used anyway.”

The result: Foucart even played with “seven and a half” of the official nine men. The ailing Philipp Hartwich (28) was only used for around eight minutes, youngster Jannis Jünemann (18/otherwise plays regional league) didn’t get any playing time at all.

Meinertshagen finds the lower limit for the number of players fundamentally sensible. “However, I think that each case should then be looked at individually. If, like ours, a player is temporarily unavailable during the warm-up, it should be taken into account that there is no penalty. As I said: In our opinion, putting an injured player on the scoresheet just to avoid a penalty doesn’t make sense.”

He was all the more pleased about his team’s sensational success: “The win against Chemnitz with this small rotation shows that we have an intact team structure and the team believes in its own performance. We showed great fighting spirit, passion, willpower and a lot of heart in this game.”

And Meinertshagen has some good news for Saturday’s game at Bamberg Baskets (8 p.m., Dyn): “Things are looking better now. Osaro Rich and Fedor Zugic have started training again.”
