Baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani has apparently been relieved by his interpreter of a significantly larger amount than initially assumed. According to an affidavit filed by federal authorities on Thursday, Ippei Mizuhara stole more than $16 million from Ohtani’s accounts over a two-year period.

It was initially assumed that the Japanese superstar of the Los Angeles Dodgers had lost at least 4.5 million due to Mizuhara’s actions. The translator is said to have used the money to pay off horrendous gambling debts.

Federal authorities charged the 39-year-old with bank fraud. In the worst case scenario, he faces a prison sentence of 30 years. Ohtani said he had no knowledge of the transactions in question.

The Japanese Ohtani (29), who is both an excellent pitcher and hitter, signed a ten-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers last December.
