Controversy Surrounding Foul Call in Olympiacos-Barcelona Game: Euroleague Admits Referee Error

The end of Olympiacos-Barcelona was surrounded by great controversy for the foul that the referees called on Petrusev on Parker when the Barcelona player was rushing the last seconds with a triple in search of victory. The foul led to three free throws for Jabari, who converted the first two and he missed the third.

But the complaints of the Greeks go further. There was a play at the end of regulation time that could have been even more decisive for the fate of the match, and Tomas Satoransky could have taken more than the stipulated five seconds to do it on a baseline kick with 16 seconds remaining. The referees did not signal the infraction and the play ended in the basket, huge on the other hand, from Laprovittola’s tie.

The Euroleague has issued the report of the last plays of that match, and admits that there was a referee error in that play precisely. According to the Euroleague, the referees should have signaled the Czech player’s violation of the Barcelona and give possession of the ball to Olympiacos. This is what the report says:

“With 16.3 seconds remaining in the last quarter, Barcelona player Tomas Satoransky has the ball in his hands and before putting it into play exceeds the 5-second limit (FIBA OBR – Art. 17.3.1. The player who takes the throw-in should not take more than 5 seconds to release the ball). The referees should have called a 5-second infraction that would result in possession for Olympiacos Piraeus.

However, in the other play that initially provoked more criticism from the Greek team, Petrusev’s foul on Parker, the Euuroleague considers it well refereed. And in case there are any doubts, he also explains that the review was to see if it was or not within the regulatory time and never to see if it was a foul or not, because that cannot be reviewed according to the regulations. This says:

“With 1.0 second left in overtime, defender Filip Petrusev touches Jabari Parker’s arm with his left hand when he begins the upward movement that precedes the shot. The referees called a foul. Correct decision.

In accordance with IRS regulations, this situation is reviewable under item 00:00 of the Play Clock, 2.2 Foul Before Expiration of Time. A foul called with no time remaining on the game clock (00:00) at the end of any quarter or any overtime will be reviewed by the referees to determine only the following question: whether the called foul occurred before the lights came on. Red LEDs (indicating the end of play time).

Referees will be allowed to use instant replay to determine whether (and how much) time should be put on the game clock, but only when it is confirmed by replay that a foul was called before the red LED lights came on ( indicating the end of playing time). Before resuming play, the referees adjusted the clock to 0.5 which was the time when the illegal contact occurred.”
