Rostock Seawolves Fight to Secure BBL Survival

The situation in the fight to stay in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) is getting worse and worse. Before the 28th matchday, the teams between 13th place (Mitteldeutscher BC – eight wins from 27 games) and 18th place (Tigers Tübingen – six wins from 27 games) are separated by just two wins. Right in the middle are the Rostock Seawolves, who are currently fifteenth with seven wins from 26 games. Two clubs will be relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA at the end of the season.

Seawolves still need two, or better three, wins

“The victory in Tübingen was important, especially because we were finally able to break this series of defeats. But we haven’t achieved anything yet. It’s still a difficult road to stay in the league. I think we’ll need two or three more wins,” says Jens Hakanowitz, sporting director of the Rostock Seawolves.

On Sunday, April 14th, the North Germans want to take the next step towards staying in the league from 5 p.m. The current German champions Ratiopharm Ulm, who are currently in fifth place with 18 wins from 27 games, will be a guest in front of more than 4,000 spectators. “Ulm is a Eurocup team and is still the reigning champion. The core of the team has remained. With Trevion Williams, they also have a center in their ranks who was recently appointed to the First Eurocup Team. They have incredible quality and depth squad,” says Christian Held, coach of the Rostock Seawolves.

Use of Augustine Rubit still open

The Wolves were able to increase the quality of their squad once again and signed Augustine Rubit, a Euroleague player from Bayern Munich. “Augustine is a super guy who will help us on and off the field. With his whole demeanor you can tell that he is an incredible player and person. He helps the other guys and they listen to him because of course he already has a lot to show for it has in his career,” says Jens Hakanowitz about the last-minute newcomer.

Augustine Rubit, who was out for over a year due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, signed his contract in Rostock after passing the medical tests at the beginning of the week. “I am excited about the opportunity to play for the Seawolves and be part of the team. My only goal coincides with the team’s goal: We want to win as many games as possible,” says Rubit, who wears jersey number 24 for the Wolves.

Seawolves now have eight Americans on their roster

It is not yet clear whether the American will play against Ulm on Sunday. “Augustine brings us incredible quality. He will definitely help us on and off the field. He is already getting involved and supporting us wherever he can. We are happy that he is with us and that this opportunity has arisen “, said Christian Held, who is now spoiled for choice with eight Americans and has to put two in the stands since the BBL only allows six foreigners per match day.

Seawolves won two of three games against Ulm

Although Ulm is the favorite, the North Germans have proven in the past that they can defeat the Baden-Württemberg team, winning two of three BBL matches so far and the first leg with 107:89. “We will give Ulm a fight and play to win. It will be very difficult, but it is not impossible. If you manage to control Ulm’s quality on the field and find one-on-one situations at the end “We have a chance to take some of the team game away from them,” said Christian Held.
