Last weekend, the annual Dutch Championship for veterans (NVK) took place in Amersfoort, according to tradition. As always, it was a pleasant event (thanks in part to the helpful volunteers from BC Amersfoort), where there was a fanatical battle on the track, but the conversations off the track were at least as important.
A large core of regular participants was present again, but fortunately a large number of ‘debutants’ also participated. However, there are some concerns, because new growth is desperately needed, especially in the youngest categories. On the other hand, there was the positive fact that this year the competition took place in the 75+ category for the first time.
A stroke of luck was that physiotherapist Martin ter Plegt was calmer than in many other years. The prizes were presented by association chairman Jan Helmond (on Saturday) and competition affairs board member André Gelauf (on Sunday). This time, the Wim Top trophy was taken home by Rick Paap, in appreciation of his perseverance and love for our sport: despite significant health problems, he managed to successfully complete all his matches based on character. The applause at the awards ceremony has not often sounded so loud!
