Olympia-Hammer im Tennis?

Tennis star Rafael Nadal wants to hunt for medals one last time at the Olympic Games in Paris. He is promising a very special partnership for the doubles competition.

Rafael Nadal’s career is coming to an end, but before that the 37-year-old has set himself a few final goals, including the Olympic Games in Paris. And there could be a fantastic pairing with Carlos Alcaraz in the doubles competition. “Carlos doesn’t have to ask me anything, if everything goes well, we will play,” Nadal recently confirmed on IGUALES, the podcast of the Madrid Open, in which the two are currently competing.

The topic is not new in itself: Alcaraz admitted some time ago that it would be “a dream” for him to compete together with the Spanish tennis legend in Paris. Not just to fight for the medals, but also simply for “the experience of playing doubles with my idol. I would particularly like to create this memory with him.”

It would also be a special highlight for Nadal in what is probably the last season of his career – also because the games will take place in Nadal’s living room, in Roland Garros.

Nadal and Alcaraz make tennis fans dream before the Olympics

“It’s very exciting for me too,” admitted the 14-time French Open winner when asked about the possible partnership with his compatriot, who is 17 years his junior. Numerous tennis lovers, not only in Spain, probably share this feeling with Nadal.

It would be the dream combination of one of the biggest stars in tennis history and a player who would like to become one in the coming years. Alcaraz has long since laid the foundation for this: the Spaniard won his second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2023, and he had already climbed to the top of the world rankings – as the youngest player ever.

“I hope that I am good enough to be a good partner for him, and I am sure that he will be for me,” Nadal continued. “I think it would be good for the Spanish team too, so we’ll see how it goes.”

The former world number one is currently not qualified for the major event due to his current ranking position of No. 512. If he makes it back into the top 400 in the rankings by then, as a multiple Grand Slam winner he should probably expect a wildcard – especially since he has already appeared at the Olympic Games twice (in 2008 in singles and 2016 in doubles). was victorious.

Nadal is struggling with physical problems

However, it should be noted that there is still a big question mark over whether the two Spanish players will compete together, because due to his ongoing physical problems, the “Bull of Manacor” is currently only checking from week to week whether he can even compete in an event. Alcaraz also repeatedly struggles with minor injuries – most recently it affected a tendon in his right arm.

Nevertheless, Nadal did not want to rule out the possibility of the two of them getting together on the court before a possible appearance in Paris: “It would be great to play one or two tournaments before the Olympic Games to prepare and find your way around the court .”

A big stress test, especially for the Mallorcan’s body, took place a few weeks earlier at the same venue at the French Open at the end of May.
