Rafael Nadal will serve in Barcelona

When Rafael Nadal recently invited people to press conferences, it usually didn’t mean anything good. However, on Monday, the 22-time Grand Slam winner from Spain announced some good news at the obligatory media event in Barcelona. Namely that he will definitely take part in the ATP 500 tournament in the Catalan capital.

“Today I feel good enough to be on the court,” said Nadal, who will face Italian Flavio Cobolli in the first round on Tuesday. The 37-year-old recently had to take a break due to physical problems (hip and abdominal muscle injuries); Nadal played his last match in Brisbane at the beginning of January. The Iberian had already missed almost all of last season.

Not least because of his ongoing injury concerns, Nadal is in the late autumn of his career. However, it is not yet completely clear whether the Mallorcan will actually hang up his racket after the current season. But: “I act as if it were my last season. I want to enjoy every moment.”

A decision about his future career – as Nadal recently emphasized – should be made before the French Open in Paris. The former world number one has already won the tournament in the French capital 14 times. And therefore twice more often than that in Barcelona.
