President Macron Reveals Plans for World Premiere Opening Ceremony at Grand Palais for Olympics

“This opening ceremony is a world premiere,” President Macron said on Monday in an interview with French television BFMTV and radio station RMC directly at the construction site of the Grand Palais in Paris, which is to play a key and symbolic role in the upcoming Olympic Games.

The planned ceremonial opening of the Games from the River Seine in the heart of the capital should – if it happens – be truly unique in the world for the Olympics. For the very first time, this traditional ceremony would take place outside the stadium. And instead of a traditional parade on its surface, hundreds of thousands of interested people should watch thousands of athletes sailing on boats.

The promised sensation – that is, the planned sailing of about 160 boats with more than ten thousand sports representatives along a six-kilometer stretch – may be in jeopardy.
