President Diomaye Faye urged to take “ambitious measures to guarantee freedom of the press”

Just a few days after taking office, the brand new President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, is invited to take ambitious measures to guarantee press freedom in the country.

Elimination of the prison sentence for press offences, zero tolerance towards attacks against the media, guarantees of the safety of journalists in the field… Reporters Without Borders (Rsf) published yesterday a press release signed by its Director of the Sub-Saharan Africa office, to ask President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to take ambitious measures to guarantee press freedom in the country, reports Le Soleil.

Sadibou Marong calls on the new regime to make the safety of journalists a priority and to propose an ambitious policy so that press freedom is respected. “In his program book, the man who was then a presidential candidate committed to abolishing the prison sentence for press offenses, a flagship recommendation of Rsf to guarantee the right to information in Senegal,” we read in the document.

The organization calls on the man who became, on April 2, President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, to keep this promise and open a new era for the media. In this sense, Rsf invites it to take up ten flagship measures, also including the regulation of digital platforms in accordance with the proposals of the International Partnership on Information and Democracy of which Senegal is a signatory or even the elimination of exorbitant fines for press crimes…
