Michel Platini obtains the challenge of the judges of the Court of Appeal of the Swiss Federal Criminal Court

By judgment of March 15, 2024, the Swiss Federal Court of Bellinzona admitted the appeal of Michel Platini (68 years old), dated October 31, 2022, and thus granted his request for recusal of all the judges of the Court of appeal from the Federal Criminal Court. This is a new twist in the affair of the payment of 2 million Swiss francs granted by Sepp Blatter (88 years old) in 2011, when he was president of FIFA, to the president of UEFA.

In July 2022, the two men were acquitted by the Federal Criminal Court but the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office and FIFA appealed. The request for recusal is based on the fact that the president of the Appeals Chamber of the Federal Criminal Court, Olivier Thormann, is the magistrate behind the opening of the criminal proceedings in 2015.

“Michel Platini takes note with satisfaction of the judgment of the Federal Court,” reacted Dominic Nellen, the French leader’s lawyer, in a press release. He expects nothing other than an acquittal, even in second instance. However, it is important that the Court of Appeal is composed of neutral judges, capable of assessing all evidence in a neutral manner. »
