Mathys Tel’s Moment of Brilliance and Potential Opportunity for Bayern in Face of Injury Woes

Shortly before the half-time break against 1. FC Köln came another one of the moments that many Bayern fans love Mathys Tel for.

At the edge of the penalty area, the Frenchman took heart and skilfully flicked the ball around the approaching defenders towards the goal. But this time there was no happy ending: the ball just hit the post.

Although he was denied a goal for the rest of the game, Tel was able to impress on Saturday afternoon. He was an absolute asset in Bayern’s offensive, tried a lot and never got tired. From most observers’ point of view, the appearance against Cologne was a good application for the 18-year-old.

Bayern’s injury woes a chance for Tel?

Given the numerous injured and ailing players in the Bavarian offensive, Tel could slip into the team on Wednesday evening against Arsenal (from 9 p.m. in the LIVETICKER) and his carefree attitude could become a decisive factor.

Serge Gnabry tore a muscle fiber in London, Kingsley Coman suffered a muscle bundle injury against Cologne, and Leroy Sané continues to struggle with pubic bone problems.

But as SPORT1 reported in advance, Sané is ready for the second leg. “Leroy can play and has to grit his teeth, like he has in the last few weeks,” announced Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel on Tuesday. “Due to the personnel situation with Kingsley and Serge, both of whom cannot play, he has to grit his teeth for as long as possible.”

Tuchel usually brings Tel in as a joker

This means that the chances for Tel are anything but good. Under Tuchel, the Frenchman is “just” a high-class joker and is used often, but not for long.

Before the game against 1. FC Köln, it was the game at SC Freiburg (2-2) in March in which the youngster was allowed to start for the last time. Back then, Tel was able to score well, but he wasn’t particularly convincing when it came to defensive work. Again and again he criminally let Joshua Kimmich down on the right defensive side.

And that’s exactly what Bayern can’t use against the Londoners. Sané has particularly stood out for his work at the back in recent weeks.

“If he has his qualities up front and is so active at the back and supports Joshua Kimmich so much, then he is simply a world-class player,” said Max Eberl about Sané after the game when asked by SPORT1.

So far, Tel has not been able to receive such praise.

Tuchel has already fired a warning shot

Tuchel had already sent his protégé a small warning shot a few weeks ago shortly before the game at Lazio.

“He lost his momentum a little bit. “He’s no longer as aggressive when he comes, not even in the box,” the Bayern coach said at the time, but at the same time promised: “We won’t stop trusting him.”

Tel’s advisor dissatisfied?

Tel’s advisor Gadiri Camara recently caused astonishment. Shortly after the record champions’ defeat in Heidenheim, he posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Be unfair never pay”. In English: It never pays to be unfair.

It is unclear whether the agent was referring to Tuchel and his dealings with Tel. It still caused unnecessary excitement because many people took it that way. Unnecessary in the current situation and not sensible for the young Frenchman.

The only thing that can help Tel at the moment is performances like the one against Cologne. And then against Arsenal, if necessary, as a substitute. Tuchel emphasized in several conversations on Saturday evening that the game against the English could last over 120 minutes.

In an extension, Tel could actually become a decisive factor.
