Coco Gauff’s Tough Battle Ends in Defeat Against Madison Keys in Madrid

Coco Gauff battled for two and a half hours and ended up losing her round of 16, Monday evening in Madrid, against her compatriot Madison Keys. The 20-year-old American, world No. 3, had difficulty holding her serve (13 double faults), losing the first set in the tie-break.

In the third set, Gauff made the break first, at 2-2, confirming it straight away. But she gave up her commitment in the following service game and Keys took the lead at 5-4 before validating her qualification on her third match point (7-6 [4]4-6, 6-4).

In nine previous appearances on Madrid clay, the American Madison Keys (20th in the world, 29 years old) had never done better than a place in the round of 16 (in 2016). She will face Tunisian Ons Jabeur (8th in the WTA rankings) in the quarter-finals, who dominated world 10th Jelena Ostapenko (6-0, 6-4) on Monday.
