Alekna broke the discus world record at the Oklahoma Throws Series in the USA on Sunday, reaching a result of 74.35 meters.
The previous record since 1986 belonged to the German Jürgen Schult – 74.08 meters.
Around midnight Lithuanian time, the new world record holder sent the happy message to his father, to which he received the reply: “Good job.”
21-year-old Alekna did not hide that he already knew before the competition that the wind in Oklahoma would be favorable for good results. “I knew the weather was good and I knew I was capable of throwing that far, but I didn’t put any pressure on myself,” he was quoted as saying by the Lithuanian portal “15min.lt”.
“I just enjoyed the moment and it happened. I was expecting the discus to go 74 meters because with the wind you can get a few more meters and I know what a good shot looks like. I had a feeling it was going to be far,” said the world record holder.
