On Sunday evening the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner won the final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami, in the United States, beating the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in two sets (6-3, 6-1). Sinner, who is twenty-two years old, thus moves to second place in the men’s ranking of the best tennis players in the world, overtaking the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. It is the best result ever for an Italian tennis player: the second was Adriano Panatta’s fourth place in the Seventies.

The Masters 1000 tournaments are among the most prestigious of the tennis season, second in importance only to the four Grand Slam tournaments. Sunday evening was Sinner’s fourth final in a Masters 1000: he had won one so far, the one in Toronto, in August last year. Two weeks ago he lost in the semifinals of the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, where he was beaten in three sets by Alcaraz, who then won the tournament in the final against Daniil Medvedev. In January this year he won the Australian Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the most important result of his career so far.
