Canadian NFL Draft Prospects: Making Waves in Detroit

Tight ends Theo Johnson and Tanner McLachlan, as well as defensive tackle Giovanni Manu, brought the number of Canadian prospects drafted this year in the National Football League (NFL) to four on Saturday in Detroit.

Johnson was selected 107th overall in the fourth round by the New York Giants.

The former Penn State Nittany Lions played 45 games in 4 seasons in the NCAA, where the Winnipeg, Manitoba native caught 77 passes for 938 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Johnson set personal highs during the 2023 campaign with 34 receptions, 341 yards and 7 majors.

Manu was also drafted in the fourth round, at 126th overall, by the Detroit Lions. The Tonga native grew up in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, and played for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

McLachlan, for his part, found a buyer in the sixth round, at 194th overall, when the Cincinnati Bengals made him their choice. The Albertan wore the uniform of the University of Arizona Wildcats for the last two seasons.

During the second day of the draft on Friday, Ontario’s Isaiah Adams was selected in the third round by the Arizona Cardinals. The offensive lineman was the 71st player to be named.

Moreover, Adams, Johnson and Manu are respectively classified in the 1st, 2nd and 8th levels by the Recruiting Office of the Canadian Football League, whose draft will take place Tuesday evening.
