Indonesian Shuttlers Secure Qualification for All Badminton Medal Events in Paris Olympics

Jakarta. Indonesian shuttlers have secured enough points to qualify for all badminton medal events in the Paris Olympics, the country’s sport association announced on Friday.

Badminton will feature 172 athletes from various countries in five medal events.

In men’s singles, Indonesia will field All England champion Jonatan Christie and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, while Gregoria Mariska Tunjung will play in women’s singles.

The duo of Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti seeks to defend the gold medal in women’s doubles won by their compatriots Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu in the last Olympics.

Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto became Indonesia’s sole medal hope in men’s doubles, and so did Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari in mixed doubles.

“We have reached a crucial milestone in our Olympic journey thanks to the hard work of our athletes, coaches, and supporting units. This is a result of collective work,” said Fadil Imran from the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).

Fadil said Indonesian shuttlers will continue to compete in international tournaments to be seeded better ahead of the Paris Olympics.

They will play in the Badminton Asia Championship, the Thomas and Uber Cups, and the Indonesian Open until June.
