Indonesia Aims to Regain Thomas Cup Title in 2024

JAKARTA – Indonesia remains the leader in Thomas Cup titles since the men’s team competition was first introduced in 1949.

This prestigious championship will again be held this year from April 27 to May 5, 2024 at the Chengdu High-Tech Zone Sports Center Gymnasium in Chengdu, China.

Indonesia gave everything they could to fight the tournament. Indonesian badminton parent company PBSI is also targeting Jonatan Christie and his friends in a bid to get the trophy back.

In the history of the competition, Indonesia ranks first among the countries with the most Thomas Cup trophies. A total of 14 titles were returned to Indonesia.

In addition, Red and White were also recorded as runners-up seven times. Their most recent runner-up came after losing to India in the final of the 2022 edition.

Indonesia won its first trophy at the Thomas Cup in 1958. In the next two competitions, in 1961 and 1964, Indonesia was able to retain the title.

Then, Indonesia advanced to the finals again in the 1967 competition. However, in this match for the red and white title, the superiority of neighboring Malaysia had to be recognized.

In the next four competitions, Indonesia again dominated the tournament. Two countries, Malaysia and Denmark, fell victim to the Red and White Army in the final.

Malaysia lost in 1970 and 1976, while Denmark experienced the power of the Indonesian badminton team in 1973 and 1979.

Three years later, Indonesia returned to the top party and fought against China. However, the Indonesian team lost 4-5 in a closely contested match.

The Thomas Cup returned to Indonesia two years later. At that time, Indonesia decided to retaliate for the previous incident by defeating China.

However, Indonesia quickly won the next four competitions. During that period, both of their chances to advance to the finals ended in second place.

The Thomas Cup trophy remained in Indonesia long after those dark times. Indonesia won the title five years in a row: 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.

The heyday of red and white has been gone for 17 years. Indonesia’s best performance over that long period was finishing second twice.

Glory has returned to Indonesia in the 2021 competition. Garuda returned to the finals and defeated China to end their title drought.

This year, Indonesia has brought home 10 of its best male players who will once again aim for the trophy. PBSI is very optimistic that the existing squad will be able to achieve the given goals.
