In Crisis: Ralph Hasenhüttl facing Relegation Battle with VfL Wolfsburg

Relegation battle instead of safe relegation, Ralph Hasenhüttl is in a sporting crisis with VfL Wolfsburg after their third defeat en suite.

When he returned to his old love Leipzig, the “Wolves” were defeated 3-0 (match report >>>). Looking at the table is worrying, five game days before the end of the season the lead over relegation is only two points, and there are six points over a fixed relegation place.

The Austrian was already aware that it would be a close fight to stay in the league. “It was clear to me in advance that the situation wouldn’t be easy. I’m not going to Leipzig and assuming three points,” he said on “Sky”.

Nevertheless, the starting position seemed easier for Wolfsburg after Hasenhüttl’s debut against Bremen, when they won 2-0 and had a cushion of eight points. Then there was one defeat after another and the lead melted away.

Triple substitution was Wolfsburg’s undoing

Hasenhüttl admitted that the defeat in Leipzig was deserved. However, he also felt the game could have just as easily gone the other way, especially given the performance in the first 60 minutes. “As long as we were organized and didn’t open up the space, it was difficult for the opponent (Leipzig’s note) to create scoring opportunities,” emphasized the man from Graz.

After the home defeat against Gladbach, Hasenhüttl also made some personnel changes in the game against Leipzig. He assessed whether that was his downfall as follows: “The starting eleven did an excellent job for 60 minutes. We were 1-0 down, hardly allowed anything and had a lot of chances ourselves.”

After 65 minutes, the Austrian made three changes. This shot backfired. “It was only because of the substitutions that we became less tactically disciplined. That took away our chance to stay in the game,” he continued. Finally Sesko and Openda put the lid on it. “If you want to take something away from this (Leipzig note) against such an opponent with so much quality up front, then you have to play a perfect game,” said Hasenhüttl.

“These are games where we have to get the necessary points”

The situation at VfL Wolfsburg is tense, now Hasenhüttl is really challenged. There are crucial weeks ahead.

“We know that there are three important games coming up. Above all, we have to get results. It doesn’t help us if we keep up and have a phase where we play well. We also need the ability, like in the game against Bremen “To pull a thing too,” said the Austrian at a press conference.

First Wolfsburg meets their direct rivals Bochum at home, before they go away to Freiburg and then wait at home for bottom team Darmstadt. “These are games where we have to get the necessary points,” said Hasenhüttl.
