Tennis: still injured, Alcaraz, double title holder, withdraws from the Barcelona tournament

More bad news for the Spanish tennis player. Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona 2024. This is his second consecutive withdrawal after the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo. Double title holder, the world No. 3 still has a weakened right arm.

The player suffers from “compression of the median nerve”, the discomfort having not entirely dissipated on Sunday morning during training. The organizers immediately announced his absence. This time again, “even if he tried until the last moment, he will not participate” in the tournament, the press release specifies.

At only 20 years old, the Spaniard is already suffering from numerous injuries, just like his elder Rafael Nadal, who is back in Barcelona. He will not defend his crown from Monday in Catalonia and will lose 500 points in the ATP rankings. His victory at Indian Wells last March nevertheless allowed him to score solid points before the start of the gravel season.

Alcaraz therefore plays it safe and preserves himself for the upcoming Masters 1000 series. Madrid on April 22 then Rome on May 6, before returning to the clay at Roland Garros, where he is still aiming for a first title.
