The 37-year-old athlete is having a catastrophic start to the season. He maintained a poor .099 batting average in 71 plate appearances in 2024.

Abreu is currently in the second year of a three-year, $58 million contract.

Named rookie of the year in the American League in 2014, the Cuban is in his 11th campaign in major baseball. He was notably crowned American MVP in 2020 and received three invitations to the all-star game.

“José Abreu is an exceptional human being,” Brown said. He is altruistic. He’s a guy who loves his teammates and he wants to get back to what he was doing last fall. And so, in the middle of that conversation, you could see that this guy is passionate and determined to get back to helping his team.”

“He agreed to return to West Palm Beach to get additional at-bats and detailed instructions on what we could do to get him back,” the Astros GM added.
