Sepp van den Berg is about to leave Liverpool permanently, Kicker reports. The 22-year-old defender will be loaned out to FSV Mainz this season, which plans to include the option to purchase in the rental contract.

Van den Berg had an excellent season at Mainz, where he played almost all matches. Partly thanks to a goal from the center defender, Mainz won against VfL Wolfsburg (1-3) on the final day of the Bundesliga.

It was an extremely important goal from Van den Berg, because Mainz would have had to go into the play-offs if they had lost to Wolfsburg. Now they secured thirteenth place on their own and thus secured a new season on Germany’s highest podium.

By achieving enforcement in the Bundesliga, Mainz has sufficient budget to permanently acquire Van den Berg. An amount of five million euros has been included in the rental contract with Liverpool for this purpose.

Arne Slot will therefore have no say in the future of Van den Berg at Liverpool, who was taken over from PEC Zwolle as a great talent in 2019. Van den Berg has been loaned out several times and has only played four times for Liverpool’s first team.

Van den Berg played a total of 36 matches for Mainz this season, scoring 3 goals. His contract with Liverpool runs until mid-2026.
