German Women’s Tennis: More Than Just Angelique Kerber – A Closer Look at the Rising Stars of the DTB

With the exception of Angelique Kerber, German tennis women have had a hard time getting into the top ranks in the world in recent years. The status quo of DTB players is not as bleak as it is often made out to be, says former professional player Andrea Petkovic.

In order to find the first German player in the tennis world rankings, you currently have to turn over a few pages. As number 67, Tatjana Maria is currently the best-placed DTB player. Tamara Korpatsch (No. 77) and Laura Siegemund (83) are, along with the 36-year-old, the only Germans in the top 100.

In Andrea Petkovic’s eyes, this is nothing more than a snapshot. She is convinced: German women’s tennis still has a few aces up its sleeve. “We have a lot of talents who can play very well, such as Jule Niemeier and Eva Lys,” said Petkovic in an interview with the “t-online” portal. The former professional player is convinced of their “talent and ability” and “I see both players aiming for the top 20 in the near future and in the medium term.”

Petkovic believes in a successful Kerber summer

But Petkovic believes that the three talents Nastasja Schunk, Ella Seidel and Noma Noha Akugue will also attract attention in the future. “You always see flashes of great talent, but they still need a little bit. All three went to school normally, not like others who left school early and could only concentrate on tennis,” explained the 36-year-old the jump of the young German players that has not yet taken place.

According to Petkovic, Angelique Kerber still towers above all other German women. After her pregnancy break, the Kiel native is currently only ranked 330th in the world, but the competition shouldn’t be blinded by this.

“Angie knows how to win big matches”

“Someone like Angie knows how to win big matches and how to play in Grand Slams. And I think we have to keep an eye on her, especially in the grass season,” said Petkovic, predicting a successful summer for her former teammate.

Yes, Kerber will also get older and will have to reduce her tournament program accordingly. “But as we have seen, it can certainly work,” Petkovic is convinced that the three-time Grand Slam winner will still attract attention with a few more victories.
