As of: April 30, 2024 10:02 p.m

The Telekom Baskets Bonn can still hope for direct playoff participation in the Basketball Bundesliga. On Tuesday the Baskets celebrated an away win in Bamberg.

In the end, Bonn clearly beat the Bamberg Baskets on matchday 31 with 89:79 (46:41) and thus at least temporarily captured sixth place in the table, which is still enough for direct playoff participation. However, their pursuer Rasta Vechta in seventh place has played one less game, but has to play against third-placed Chemnitz on May 1st. Bamberg slips to twelfth place.

Glynn Watson was Bonn’s best with 22 points and five assists. Till Pape contributed 15 points. Brian Fobbs (13 points) and Sam Griesel (11) also scored in double figures. Trey Woodbury and Malik Johnson scored best for the hosts with 13 points each.

Bonn run after a bad start

The Baskets started the game poorly and were quickly down 6-0 after two Bamberg threes, but then quickly recovered and went on a 9-0 run. Ex-Basket Karsten Tadda equalized the score at 14:14 three minutes before the end of the quarter, but the Bonn team ended the quarter with another run and went into the second quarter with a 25:19 lead.

Things initially continued to go well for Bonn there. Brian Fobbs put the Baskets ahead by two figures for the first time with a three-pointer (36:26). However, Bamberg fought back and equalized again through Trey Woodbury (41:41), also due to many Bonn turnovers and slight missed throws. Savion Flagg with a three-pointer and Till Pape from the free throw line gave Bonn a five-point lead at halftime (46:41).

Bamberg takes the lead

Even after the break, the Baskets remained in control. Savion Flagg scored with a three-pointer to make it 56:45 from Bonn’s perspective, giving them their highest lead to date. But that was like a wake-up call for the hosts, who then picked up their game again, especially in defense.

Two minutes before the end of the quarter, Zach Copeland even put the guests in the lead with a three-pointer (59:58). However, the strong Watson ensured that Bonn went into the final quarter with a 65:62 lead.

Copeland’s step error decides

The final quarter was tight. Five minutes before the end, Copeland scored for Bamberg to make it 73:73. From then on, the defenses dominated, especially those from Bonn. The Baskets didn’t allow Bamberg any points for almost three minutes. Sam Griesel put Bonn back in the lead 79:73 from the free throw line. Bamberg got within two points thanks to a three-pointer from Woodbury, but Fobbs immediately had the answer.

And then Copeland made the crucial mistake. With 45 seconds left, he made a step error. The Bonn team took advantage of this and pulled ahead to 85:79 thanks to free throws from Glynn Watson. Bamberg took another time out, but didn’t use it anymore. Bonn closed the gap at the back, took advantage of the opportunities at the front and ultimately achieved a deserved away win.

The Baskets continue next Sunday (6.30 p.m.) with a home game against Würzburg. Bamberg travels to the Crailsheim Merlins the day before (6.30 p.m.).
