First with two days to go, with a victory ahead of the second, many GAB coaches of the last 20 years have dreamed of it, but few have achieved it. Participating in the play-offs is a great human adventure and the Garonnais have given themselves the right to do so. Pornic having given up for a few weeks, they are certain to finish in one of the first two places, and as ESMS also lost, here they are at the very top of the ranking.

However, the final result somewhat masks the reality of the match and even if the Garonnais led almost for 40 minutes, they had to fight until the end to win. The first minutes, however, are Garonne. The new father of little Martin, Corentin Lopez, hits a triple then, on the next action, drives into the racket and serves Wansi Fonkua for two legendary alley-oops: 11-5.

Mansaré and Keita tried to reverse the trend, helped by the clumsiness of the locals who failed to make the match a success. “We knew it would be hard this evening, we tried to hold on as much as possible in the first half, but we lacked clarity on certain easy shots,” lamented Erwan Mourier, the Degebist coach. His Garonne counterpart, Adrien Ferrer, recognized that his team “had a sluggish match at the start because Dax wanted to prevent us from having a little euphoria and they slowed down the game on both sides of the field”.

First place versus retention

As a result, the score only progressed slowly and the match was slow to get going. The second quarter gets off to a good start. Comblon delights the audience with his thunderous dunks and his skill, while Lopez continues his work in the racket. The gap widens (36-23) because the GAB dominates the air but concedes a 6-0 just before the middle break which revives the Landais. “It is very rare that we miss two halves in the intensity,” said the Garonnais technician. Like its captain Mathieu Auriol, who is on all the good shots on both sides of the field, the GAB gradually takes control of the match which allows all the players to find playing time. Noël-Pierre de away and Klingelschmitt in the racket took the opportunity to show their qualities (59-47, 32nd). Lopez and Comblon, each in their own register, well helped by Jones and Réal, continue to defend the lead until the end. After yet another loss of the red and black ball, Kévin Comblon went for a monstrous dunk. The Dacquois, lacking rotations, must therefore bow.

“We are playing the match with our current limits but we are missing a victory to ensure our survival”, noted Erwan Mourier when his opposite side can only savor the victory: “I would like to take my hat off to Erwan [Mourier] because he is holding the DGB boat despite the difficult times.” All that remains is for the Garonnais to savor this 18th victory, synonymous with qualification for the play-offs. But the yellow and blue crowd is not satisfied, because the audience in the room only talked about first place after the match.
