From Near Tragedy to New Beginnings: American Heritage High School Football Player Advocates for Heart Health Awareness

Last August, Local 10 told you about American Heritage High School football player Timothy Burroughs-Love, who collapsed after going into cardiac arrest on his team’s sideline during a preseason game.

Today, he says he is “just lucky to be alive.”

The 17-year-old was saved after athletic training staff at his high school in Plantation administered life-saving measures through CPR and an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), vital skills acquired through extensive preparation and training.

“I thank AED for saving my life,” said the teenager.

But without more football, Burroughs-Love lost his athletic scholarships, so others stepped in, creating the LOVE fund.

“It was important for me to start this LOVE fund so I could help achieve their goals. Even though he lost his scholarships, being able to help him go to college and reach his potential,” said American Heritage physical education teacher Seymour Loftman.

Grateful for his life, Burroughs-Love and his family say they are embracing new beginnings with their second chance at life.

“This is bigger than football. I feel like God has bigger and better plans for Timothy,” said his mother, Tenise Love.

Burroughs-Love now advocates for heart health awareness and highlights the importance of AED systems in schools and businesses.

Burroughs-Love said she will not be attending her high school prom, and instead plans to go to the Heart Ball this Saturday at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood to continue her new mission and calling.

“I love helping people. I just want to help the community in any way I can,” Burroughs-Love said.

The Heart Ball will be presented by Local 10’s Jenise Fernández.
