French Players Shine in Barcelona ATP 500 Tournament: Van Assche Advances, Grenier Falls Short

It’s a great performance to open the second day of the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona in the French clan. Luca Van Assche, whose place in the Top 100 hangs by a thread this week (99th), got the better of Zhizhen Zhang, 47th in the ATP, in two sets (7-5, 6-2 ) and 1h35 of play in the 1st round. To do this, he showed character. While he was serving to take the lead at 5-4, the Frenchman was broken, but he did not give up, making the difference again in the following game, before confirming to lead a sleeve. Converting 6 of his 7 opportunities in the game, he was particularly effective in important moments and will face Hungarian Fabian Marozsan in the 2nd round.

For Hugo Grenier, on the other hand, it is already over. Drafted from qualifying, the 159th in the world failed to take advantage of his second chance in Catalonia. Facing clay court specialist Roberto Carballes Baena, 72nd in the ATP, he was only able to save six games (6-2, 6-4) in 1h22. The Spaniard will, however, have a lot to do in the second round against Lorenzo Musetti who showed great things last week in Monte-Carlo.
