Food surplus in vending machines: Portugalete’s solidarity initiative

In the Vizcaya town of Portugalete your neighbors can collect from free food surplus in vending machines located along the streets. With food frommainly, from dining rooms schools of the area, the students son clave to replace these machines, which hundreds of neighbors use.

Adolfo Zarandieta travel to Potugalete, in Bilbao, to discover the solidarity initiative from the Residuos and Rexcatering Foundation. In the Vending machines located on the streets of the town, residents can find every day and free, food rations.

This food surplus comes mainly from school cafeterias in the areaaccording to Álvaro, project director of the Residuos Foundation to ‘Callejeros’.

Adolfo Zarandieta also visits one of these schools and know first hand how the portions are prepared which are then placed in the free vending machines.

They are precisely the students of the schools who, once the rations are prepared, packaged and labeled, are in charge of replenish vending machines so that the residents of Portugalete who need it can obtain them at no cost to them.
