First All-American Badminton Tournament a Great Success: Lee Yong-dae Makes Memorable Appearance

The American-Korean Badminton Association (Chairman Kim Eung-kwon) and Lee Yong-dae’s Badminton Development Association (American Corporation Chairman Michael Lee) held the first All-American Badminton Tournament at the International Badminton Center (IBC) in Pine Brook, New Jersey on the 6th.

This tournament, hosted by the New Jersey Badminton Association (Chairman John Baek), was a great success with a total of 300 participants, including 250 players and observers, from Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Texas, and California.

In particular, badminton star Lee Yong-dae, who won the gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and played for the national team until recently, was invited to play a special event, creating unforgettable memories for club members.

Lee Yong-dae founded the Badminton Development Association and announced that he would join forces with the American Badminton Association to actively help develop badminton in the Americas by discovering young prospects in his home country and producing players like Ahn Se-young.

Meanwhile, 17 members of the Maryland Badminton Association participated under the leadership of President Park Young-min.

First, Bang Seong-ik and Jane Kim took first place in Women’s Doubles A (over 45 years old), Seongjin Jang and Jane Kim took first place in Mixed Doubles B (over 45 years old), Kevin and Jeong-cheol Park of the youth group took second place, and Kun-woo Lee (11 years old) in his 20s took C. I achieved good results, including taking 3rd place in my group.

As a special sponsor, the Sempio branch in Maryland provided goodie bags to 250 players, and Yonex presented the latest rackets and bags as prizes to the winning players.

Kim Eung-kwon, president of the Korean Badminton Association in the United States, plans to continue the competition with this tournament as an opportunity and asked for the participation and support of Koreans.
