Fatal family insomnia: dying from not sleeping

Although it may seem incredible, there is a sleep-related illness that is fatalis one of the rarest in the world and includes the 70% of cases in Spain. There are around 100 people who suffer from it in our country and there is no cure.

Can you die from insomnia? The answer is yes. It is a lethal genetic mutation: Fatal family insomnia. It is a disease that prevents you from sleeping and that destroys the nervous system.

This mutation generates a prion, an altered protein that ddeteriorates neurons, mental functionality, coordination and even speech.

“This is a period of nine months from the moment the symptoms begin until the final trigger, which is coma and death,” explains Pilar Muñoz, spokesperson for the Fatal Family Insomnia Association.

This disease is hereditary, has no treatment or cure. Álava, Navarra and the Sierra del Segura, in Jaén concentrate the highest number of cases. “In my family we estimate that around 40 people may have lost their lives due to this disease,” says Pilar.

“It is very hard to cope with this every day with a patient like this for 9 months… the person does not rest and wethose of us who are taking care of him, neither”says Pilar Muñoz, affected and member of the Fatal Family Insomnia Association.
