Fabian Holland’s 296th competitive appearance for Darmstadt ended tragically for the defender. The 33-year-old seriously injured his knee after a duel at the end of the second half in the 0-1 loss to SC Freiburg and had to be replaced by Fabian Schnellhardt in the 81st minute.

For Holland, not only was the game over, the current season was also over for him and the start of the coming season will also take place without the veteran. Because the diagnosis that the Bundesliga bottom team announced on Monday is devastating: cruciate ligament and medial ligament rupture.

The club said Holland will be out for months and will also miss large parts of the upcoming season. The SVD wants to decide on the next steps and the timing of the operation in the coming days.

The defender, who was on the ball with Darmstadt in the top German league in 2015/16 and 2016/17, was used 23 times after the Lilies returned to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2023 and was always in the starting line-up. Even Holland could not have prevented the relegation that could have happened next weekend for the Lieberknecht team, which has not won for 22 (!) games.

Lieberknecht: “The diagnosis is of course an absolute shock”

“I’m incredibly sorry for Fabi that his season is ending in this way,” coach Torsten Lieberknecht is quoted as saying on the club’s website. “For all of us at the club, but especially for him, the diagnosis is of course an absolute shock that we now have to digest.”
