Madrid President Isabel Díaz Ayuso Receives Preselected Athletes for Paris 2024 Paralympic Games

The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, today received the 47 Madrid athletes preselected to compete in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, which will be held between August 28 and September 8.

Díaz Ayuso thanked them for their “effort to reach the top, for those hours, disappointments, sleeplessness and the healthy ambition of wanting to be better every day. I have no doubt that you are going to take Spain to the top and that we are going to be excited with you,” he emphasized. In an event held at the Real Casa de Correos, headquarters of the regional Government, the president assured that these athletes are “an example and symbol of a team and of torn down walls.” In this sense, he has highlighted some of the programs of the regional Executive to promote this inclusion, such as the Institutes Promoting physical activity and Sports, to promote their practice during extracurricular hours, and in which this year 209 public centers and 24,800 schoolchildren. In the case of Activate Your Capacity, it serves as sports promotion based on the creation of adapted schools, through the Madrid and disability federations. In this case, there are 600 athletes from disciplines such as judo, canoeing, karate, hockey or handball who participate in this initiative. The Madrid president has also detailed how the Todos Comunidad sports championships are based on the development of inclusive and adapted competitions, while Madrid Comunidad Deportiva/ Madrid Comunidad Inclusiva is aimed at Special Education centers.

4,400 athletes from all over the world

The 17th edition of the Paralympic Games will bring together 4,400 athletes with physical, intellectual, visual disabilities, paralysis or brain injury, from 182 countries, in the French capital this summer. During the 11 days of competition, 549 events will be held (271 men’s, 235 women’s and 43 mixed) in 22 disciplines. Among them: athletics, badminton, wheelchair basketball, boccia, cycling, wheelchair fencing, 5-a-side football, goalball, judo, weightlifting, horse riding, swimming, canoeing, rowing, wheelchair rugby, taekwondo, tennis table tennis, wheelchair tennis, archery, Olympic shooting, triathlon and sitting volleyball. The official list of those selected will be made public on July 15.
