The Canadian wheelchair basketball team qualified at the last minute on Monday for the Paralympic tournament in Paris thanks to a 72-60 victory in its last chance match against Italy in Antibes, France.
The Canadians took the lead from the start of the match and returned to the locker room with a 34-20 lead.
The gap narrowed to nine points in the third quarter. Then, the end of the match offered an intense game, where both teams roamed the floor from end to end in search of quickly scored baskets. With two minutes left, Patrick Anderson made a tough basket despite tight defensive coverage. He caused a foul on the play and added the additional point on the free throw.
Anderson finished the game with a team-high 23 points.
The positive result comes after a complicated tournament. Canada had previously lost all of its ranking matches to Iran, the Netherlands and France.
The Italians had a perfect record until then.
It was the last chance tournament for teams who did not qualify in the continental tournaments.
Canada, 6th at the World Championship last year, has participated in every Paralympic tournament since 1968. It won gold in 2000, 2004 and 2012.
