Daniil Medvedev meets Alexander Bublik in the Madrid round of 16

Daniil Medvedev’s love for the clay courts of the world was not always as pronounced as in the recent past. Since his tournament victory in Rome around twelve months ago, the Russian seems to have made some peace with the red ash. Which is also shown by reaching the round of 16 at this year’s ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid.

Medvedev fought his way into the round of 16 in the Spanish capital with two narrow wins over Matteo Arnaldi and Sebastian Korda. “I have to find my rhythm, but I played better and better over time in both matches,” explained the US player. 2021 Open winner after his victory over Korda.

Bublik: “I hate sand”

Medvedev will now face Alexander Bublik in the round of 16. And possibly a player who loathes the red ash even more than the Russian himself. “I hate sand,” said the Kazakh succinctly on the sidelines of the 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo in 2022.

Bublik explained in Madrid after his third-round victory over Ben Shelton that clay court tennis was still not fun for him. But now the world number 18. even on his so unloved surface solutions. In Madrid, the high altitude is particularly beneficial for the strong-serving Kazakhs.

The duel between Medvedev and Bublik promises a lot of entertainment not only because of their aversion to clay court tennis, as both represent absolute world-class tennis on a good day. In the head to head, Medvedev is clearly ahead 5-0.
