Enhancing the Historic Oran Arena: Plans for Entertainment and Tourism Boost

The Oran Arena site, included since last December in the national heritage list, will benefit from a series of services and benefits intended to enhance it and provide entertainment in order to attract the maximum number of tourists, we learned from the Public Establishment of the wilaya of Oran of the Amusement Park (EPWOPA) responsible for the management of this monument.

The operation planned by the company’s managers provides, in particular, for the installation of a giant screen through which historical and technical data relating to this historic site, which has just been classified by the Specialized Commission of Ministry of Culture and Arts, in the national heritage list. The process aims to provide visitors with all the data relating to the site and to highlight the architectural beauty of the building, indicated the director of EPWOPA, Belabbès Abderrahmane.

The site will also be equipped with seats and a media library, said the same manager, specifying that the company “is currently considering the possible organization of fantasia shows”, affirming the availability of his company to mobilize all human and material resources for the success of this initiative, “on condition,” he said, “that specialists are involved in running this structure.” The same source also indicated that EPWOPA submitted to the youth and sports directorate of the wilaya of Oran a proposal relating to the organization of sporting events on a national and African scale, in particular judo and boxing, “provided that the stands are not used,” she said.

She added, in this context, that the authorities concerned were also contacted for the operation of this site, which welcomes, each month, an average of 20,000 to 30,000 national and foreign visitors. Called “Etorro” by the Oranese, the Arena of Oran has workshops run by painters known on the Oran cultural scene and by artisans specializing in artistic crafts. The Oran Arena was built in 1908 and inaugurated in 1910. Its initial capacity was 4,000 seats, before being increased to 10,000. They received famous matadors, such as El Cordobes, Ordinez Pepe, Miguel Matéo, José Garcia Lupion, the three Chicueleb brothers. Due to their quality acoustics, they were not only used for bullfighting, but also for football tournaments, boxing and wrestling matches. After rehabilitation work, launched in 2009, they reopened their doors to the public in 2018, we recall.

Note that steps were taken by the Office for the Protection of Cultural Property for the classification of the Arenas and also the Abdelkader Alloula Regional Theater in the national heritage list. “The classification of these two national heritage monuments to be protected was validated in January 2024 by the National Commission in charge of this file, reporting to the Ministry of Culture and the Arts,” declared the head of the service to APS. heritage to the local culture department, Djameleddine Barka.
