The trip to Monte Carlo wasn’t worth it for Dominic Thiem: The 2020 US Open winner lost 1:6 and 2:6 in the principality in the first qualifying round against Roberto Bautista Agut. The Spaniard stepped in at short notice as a replacement for Arthur Cazaux.
Bautista Agut hardly needed any warm-up time and won the first set after just 27 minutes. In the second round, Thiem found his way into the game a little better, but the Austrian was never able to exert much pressure. So it was ultimately Bautista Agut who was able to celebrate making it into the second qualifying round after 71 minutes of play.
In this one, Bautista Agut, who increased to 5:2 in a direct comparison with Thiem, meets Lorenzo Sonego or David Goffin. Thiem will continue at the ATP 250 tournament in Munich from April 15th. The former world number three is in the main field thanks to a wildcard.
