Denmark Dominates at Badminton European Championships: Skaarup and Astrup Win Gold and Silver

Skaarup and Astrup meet the Danish champions in the EC final

On Sunday, Denmark wins gold and silver in men’s doubles at the Badminton European Championships in Saarbrücken, Germany.

It was already decided on Saturday, when Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup lived up to their marked favorite status and beat the Englishmen Ben Lane and Sean Vendy 21-19, 21-7.

After that, it was just a matter of which Danish pair would be on the other side of the net on Sunday, and it would be the Danish champions Andreas Søndergaard and Jesper Toft.

The duo thus got the shovel under second-seeded Frederik Søgaard and Rasmus Kjær with 21-15, 21-16 after a solid and controlled effort.

Toft and Søndergaard won the DM title in February, but currently rank only as the fourth best Danish pair and are number 44 in the world.

By comparison, Søgaard and Kjær are number 17 in the world rankings, while the final opponents Astrup and Skaarup are number 4.

Already on Saturday evening, the Danish golden harvest can be expanded to two, when the top-seeded mixed doubles, Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje, meet the French pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in the final.

There are also good chances for Danish gold in the men’s singles. Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen, who are seeded as one and two respectively, will play the semi-finals on Saturday evening.

Sunday’s women’s finals, on the other hand, will be completely without Danish participation.

The last women’s doubles already went out in the quarter-finals, and Julie Dawall Jakobsen lost as the last women’s singles on Saturday to first-seeded Carolina Marin from Spain in her semi-final.
