Roland-Garros 2024: Inflation Requires Increase in Prize Money for Players

Inflation requires? The 2024 edition of Roland-Garros aims to be ever more generous with the players. This year, the “prize money”, i.e. the overall prize pool for the tournament, will increase by 7.82% compared to last season to reach 53.478 million euros, compared to 49.6 during the 2023 edition, announced the tournament management during a press conference this Thursday.

Thus, the winner of this edition will receive 2.4 million euros for their victory, or 100,000 euros more than last year. Parity is required at Roland Garros, so the successors of Novak Djokovic for men and Iga Swiatek for women will leave with a check of the same value. The winner of the finals will earn almost half as much: 1.2 million euros. The losers of the semi-finals leave with a check for 650,000 euros, 415,000 euros for those who stopped the adventure in the quarter-final.

Another principle: no player leaves Paris empty-handed. The bonus for a defeat in the first round is 73,000 euros. Overall, the allocation increases at all levels, plus 13,000 euros for a defeat in the second round, plus sixteen thousand euros more in the third round, etc.

Ball boys touch zero balls

But it is at the qualifying level that the tournament organization wanted to concentrate its financial efforts, where players ultimately need money the most to pay for the numerous trips to participate in tournaments. Thus, the envelope dedicated to the “qualifiers”, which will be held the week preceding the Grand Slam tournament, from May 20 to 24, has increased by almost 25%. Joining the Roland Garros qualifying table thus ensures a bonus of 20,000 euros, in the event of defeat in the first round. This is what a player eliminated in the first round of the big draw received ten years ago.

Among these prestigious players, who are rather well paid, there are workers who are a little less well paid. So a ball boy (they are between 14 and 17 years old) must be content to touch balls. Their sponsor Adidas, hand on heart, still offers them the opportunity to keep their equipment. The lines judges, too, are all volunteers. They still receive a daily allowance of less than 150 euros. Almost all chair umpires, for their part, are professionals. They generally have a contract for the week or for the entire tournament.
