Not always happy despite the victory: Daniil Medvedev

6:2 and 6:4. The numbers from Daniil Medvedev’s opening success at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo read relatively unspectacular. And yet the 2021 US Open winner caused a scandal in his match against Gael Monfils.

What happened? When the score was 1:2 in the second set, the linesman made two wrong decisions on Medvedev’s baseline – if you believe the television images shown. Chair referee Mohamed Lahyani corrected the linesman’s second decision, but Medvedev could not be appeased.

Medvedev recovers quickly

The Russian was loudly upset, completely lost his concentration and had to accept the break to make it 1:3 a short time later. Medvedev didn’t have to calm down – to the chagrin of the sun protection on his bench – even at the subsequent break.

Afterwards, Medvedev, who received no warning for his verbal gaffes, rallied and won five games in a row. That’s probably why it wasn’t that difficult for the 28-year-old to apologize to Lahyani. In the round of 16, Medvedev will face his compatriot Karen Khachanov.
