Dallas Cowboys Sign Royce Freeman to Bolster Running Back Depth

The Dallas Cowboys have a huge hole at running back since Tony Pollard left for the Tennessee Titans at the start of free agency. Now, according to a report from ESPN’s Todd Archer, the NFC East team has decided to sign Royce Freeman to a one-year contract.

The University of Oregon graduate is a veteran of six seasons in the NFL. Freeman played with the Los Angeles Rams during the 2023 season and accumulated 319 yards and two touchdowns after rushing the ball 77 times.

The running back entered the NFL in 2018 as an undrafted rookie when the Denver Broncos signed him. He spent three seasons in the AFC West before being claimed off waivers in 2021 by the Carolina Panthers, but they waived him after eight weeks. The Houston Texans then signed him for the remainder of the season and he remained with them through the 2022 campaign.

Regardless of Freeman, The Cowboys have four running backs under contract. However, neither has been recognized as a three-down back. The RBs signed by Dallas are Rico Dowdle, Malik Davis, Hunter Luepke and Deuce Vaughn.

The signing of Freeman does not prevent the Cowboys from choosing one of the best prospects at the running back position in the next Draft. 30 running backs applied to the college recruiting process and one of the best is Jonathon Brooks, who spent his college years near AT&T Stadium with the Texas Longhorns.
