It must have been the music of the Champions League, it must have been the nightmare of what happened with Benzema in March 2022 in the match between PSG and Real Madrid. But the fact is that Gigio Donnarumma experienced another nightmare in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the top continental competition. And again against a Spanish team, this time Xavi’s Barcelona, who stormed the Parc des Princes and won 3-2 (10 April).
Three ducks out of three for the former Milan goalkeeper, the first the worst of all, the others perhaps less serious, but still decisive. Gigio thus contributed to the defeat of Luis Enrique’s team, who returned to the locker room with a dark face, as did Mbappé. A bad evening, the second of this season in the Champions League, after the one experienced last October 4 against Newcastle in the group stage (and lost by PSG 4-1). And now Donnarumma has ended up in the storm: «The incorrigible Donnarumma», wrote L’Equipe who gave him a 3 on his report card. And Gigio was criticized on the web even by his own fans. Who blame him above all for the opening goal scored by Raphinha in the 37th minute. Caused by a rather awkward low exit on Yamal’s cross in an attempt to anticipate Lewandowski, with the ball reaching the Brazilian, who did well to stay clear and break the deadlock. Although to tell the truth on this occasion Gigio was more unlucky because, although reckless, with that exit he tried not to let the Polish striker score.
The second mistake is on the second goal, when he returned the ball practically handing it over to Barcelona, who restarted from midfield and found the equalizer again with Raphinha on a beautiful assist from Pedri, who had just come on. Finally, the third goal in the 77th minute scored by Christensen, who had also just been thrown into the fray by Xavi. Here Gigio has no extenuating circumstances: he remained watching the ball after the corner from the left taken by Gundogan without coming out, perhaps influenced by an error just coming out in the first half. If the season in the Champions League is not one to remember (12 goals conceded, four by the Magpies and two by Milan in the return match), things are going much better in Ligue 1: he conceded 18 goals in 23 games with 16 clean sheets of the season.
