Alexander Nübel is having an outstanding season at VfB Stuttgart, but is only on loan from FC Bayern. The two clubs have now reached an agreement. The goalkeeper will stay at VfB for longer than expected. This gives rise to speculation in Munich.

FC Bayern Munich continues to see goalkeeper Alexander Nübel as a future solution after captain Manuel Neuer. As expected, the German football record champions have extended the contract with the 27-year-old Nübel, which runs until the summer of 2025, by four years until June 30, 2029.

However, Nübel will continue to be loaned out to VfB Stuttgart for the time being – and surprisingly for another two seasons, as Bayern announced on Friday. Actually, so far there has been talk of another year. This suggests that the 38-year-old national goalkeeper Neuer could extend his contract in Munich, which expires in a year, once again. Nübel had always made it clear that he no longer wanted to act as number two behind Neuer at FC Bayern.

“We are very happy that we have agreed on a long-term extension of our collaboration with Alexander Nübel,” said Bavaria’s sports director Max Eberl in the club’s announcement. “He has developed excellently in recent years and is one of the best German goalkeepers. At VfB Stuttgart he can continue to gain match practice at a high level, probably also in the Champions League next season.” With Neuer, Sven Ulreich (35), Daniel Peretz (23) and Nübel, they are in the goalkeeper position “today and in the future “excellently positioned.”

Nübel came to Bayern from Schalke on a free transfer

Nübel moved from FC Schalke 04 to FC Bayern on a free transfer in the summer of 2020. Since this season he has been on loan to the current third-placed team VfB Stuttgart. In his first season with Bayern he only played four competitive games. From then on he no longer wanted to be number two behind Neuer. From 2021 to 2023 he played on loan for AS Monaco.

“I am very happy about this decision and the trust that FC Bayern has placed in me. At the same time, I feel very comfortable in Stuttgart,” commented Nübel: “I want to be successful with VfB and take the next steps personally.”
