Champions League: Spectacular start to the quarter-finals

Real, still without the injured David Alaba, were caught cold by Man City after less than two minutes. Bernardo Silva twirled a free kick past the side of the wall, goalie Andriy Lunin got to the ball but couldn’t prevent the score from making it 0-1.

The Ukrainian did better with a great chance from Erling Haaland (7th) and enabled the home team to turn things around within three minutes. The visitors’ defense also helped. First Ruben Dias deflected a long-range shot from Eduardo Camavinga into his own goal for Stefan Ortega (12′), a little later Manuel Akanji had his foot in the game when Rodrygo cheated the ball past Ortega from close range (14′).

ManCity also lost their second lead

Real’s counterattacks always radiated danger. So Rodrygo’s poorly adjusted sights after a good half hour (33′) were the luck of the “Citizens”, who didn’t really know what to do with their advantage in possession and continued to aim for the second goal even after the break without success. A long-range shot had to break the spell, a remarkable cross corner shot from Phil Foden from 17 meters met all the requirements (66th). Josko Gvardiol also scored the second double strike of the evening from distance (71′).

Finalphase

But the two teams still didn’t have enough: Federico Valverde’s wonderful shot into the far corner made the final score 3-3 (79th) and an open starting position for the reunion on Wednesday next week in Manchester.

Draw for Bayern after being behind and taking the lead

Like Real, Bayern also fell behind early in London. Comebacker Manuel Neuer had no chance in the 1-0 win by Bukayo Saka (12th), and the hopes of the guests, who had recently been badly hit in the German league, seemed to be nipped in the bud. But instead of hitting the goal, Ben White shot at Neuer a little later (16th), and the Germans accepted the invitation.

Ex-Arsenal kicker Serge Gnabry (18th) took advantage of the chance to equalize after the home team’s sloppy build-up play, and not much later Harry Kane (32nd) made his big appearance. After a great start and foul on Leroy Sane, England’s team striker coolly rolled the penalty into the bottom right corner after David Raya’s early reaction.

Bayern mostly successfully kept Arsenal in check with their aggressive pressing even after the break, but in the end they were unable to prevent the deserved equalizer. “Joker” Leandro Trossard (76th) put the home team’s first dangerous shot into the goal from eleven meters in the second half. The “Gunners” then pushed for the winning goal, but Bayern hit the goal at the end in the person of Kingsley Coman (90th).

In Salzburg the result in London will have been noted with goodwill. If Bayern eliminate Arsenal in the second leg next week, the “Bulls” would have their ticket to the Club World Cup in the USA in the summer of 2025 in their pocket.
